When my father-in-law died, we worried about Mom. How would she handle being alone? She’d gone from her father’s house to marriage fifty years prior and had never been on her own. Dad drove her everywhere, even to the grocery store a half mile away.

The day of the funeral, Mom wore a pink dress. Why, I’ve never been sure. Maybe she was celebrating Dad’s life with Jesus. Maybe she hated black. But in a way it set the tone for her widowhood. She did it her way.

She took in a boarder so she wouldn’t be in the big house alone.

She took a cruise to Bermuda with a friend and one to Alaska with a daughter.

She continued to play the piano at church.

She decided when she wanted to sell the house and move to a retirement community, where she bought a cottage and took long walks every day and fed the geese in the pond. She played the piano for the choir at her new place.

Until her final illness in her mideighties, she always dressed stylishly, never appeared without her makeup on and her hair combed—even the time she dyed it an unfortunate dead black—and she always loved to tell her stories.

I hope I do as well in my widowhood, though I can do without the unfortunate dye job.

Blessed is the one

who does not walk in step with the wicked

or stand in the way that sinners take

or sit in the company of mockers,

but whose delight is in the law of the LORD,

and who meditates on his law day and night.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,

which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither—

whatever they do prospers.

PSALM 1:1-3
